Wow. Your favorite ever? I’m honored. This was a fun shoot. Let’s try to do another in SB.
November 1st, 2007 at 11:32 am
rad! it’s cool to see your concept on film… you and ron rocked it! and thanks again for slowing down, and stopping, to help out carlie and i.
November 1st, 2007 at 11:34 am
You and Ron and both so freakin’ talented!! I loved this – I can’t believe you found that cool empty space in all of NY! I would LOVE to “just stop” sometimes, but it seems that only happens when I’m asleep. sigh.
Good job, guys!

I skipped over this video in Google Reader once and I got too busy to watch it. I marked it as read and an hour later it came up again…I watched it…I loved it…and I thank you for it! Kathy

So True.
I walked by that spot every day that week and it was so empty, only a few people on the steps standing out.
Awesome
November 1st, 2007 at 12:59 pm
Whoa…..
I found even just a minute of peace when you said “Just stop”. The vision aid of you sittting there alone and the quiet……wow. You could not have directed that piece any better. That was incredible Dane. Thank you.
Damion.

AWESOME WORK guys! My favorite part is when you say “stop”, look right at the camera, and the whole scene just goes …. quiet …. awesome teamwork between you two guys!

Wow. Gave me chills as I watched. The busyness of NYC contrasted with the stillness of your words and actions was compelling. Funny how the irony is stillness is actually more strength and focus than all the busy movement we make trying to get things done.
Reminds me of a great quote I just read, “When you find yourself in a hole, stop digging.” Thanks for sharing…and standing out.
November 1st, 2007 at 1:22 pm
Gotta LOVE Ron… and this video. You both are an inspiration to us. We all could use to slow down a bit. I seem to always be playing catch up! Ron did some videos for us that I need to post… stop by and check them out!
xoxoxo to you!!!

Nice job Dana. You are a master.
Any chance to do that on a wave?

Be still … I love it.

Well shot! Too short!

NYC – the epitome of manic busyness… just because everyone’s moving fast doesn’t mean they’re actually getting anywhere.
Indeed, we would all be better off is everyone took the time to stop more often, or at the very least, (as Dennis Hooper exclaimed in Blue Velvet) ‘Just Slow Down!’
Great juxtaposition. Well captured. Made me think about how I enjoy things more by taking on less… I trust you’re thinking the same?
Thanks for Sharing Little Brother.
November 1st, 2007 at 1:47 pm
smooth. you and ron are rocking it. thanks for the reminder to stop and be quiet.
November 1st, 2007 at 1:56 pm
Hola Dana,
I liked this very much. Given the cover note, I expected Central Park. What was that, the Public Library?
November 1st, 2007 at 2:06 pm
Thanks Dane. That was really cool. And isn’t it even a testimony to our need to slow down when we see all of our reactions to it? I really think we can live more that way and were really designed to be that way. As cliche as it sounds, we ARE human BEINGS not human DOINGS.
Thanks for the reminder.

Isn’t that so true. Although we feel so many times as though we can’t afford to just STOP!
Thanks for the reminder Dane. I think i’ll head off for a nap now. ;-)

Dane, sweetie! Watching the video made me stop. It was beautiful. And now I’ve got to gooo again! sigh! thank you!

Dig it. How long do I get to stop?
November 1st, 2007 at 4:39 pm
as long as you need to my man … as long as you need to.
November 1st, 2007 at 5:24 pm
[...] take a minute to enjoy this…and then take a minute to just stop. [...]
November 1st, 2007 at 6:28 pm
Dane, get this…
So, I was hard at work on my laptop. Then I heard this voice coming from my computer. I quickly flipped around thinking I don’t have my skype or gtalk open do I?? As I listened to the voice, it kind of sounded like you. Hmmm…
Then, I proceeded to flip through my open screens and Firefox tabs, and realized I still had your blog open. I scrolled down the page, and finally found where your voice was coming from. Haha..
Today was my lucky day… I was able to listen to your live demo about your FastTrack Photographer technology. It looked like it was unplanned, so I guess was lucky to have your blog open! I think I’m going to start keeping your blog open in the background in case you want to do any more impromptus. Keep the knowledge coming. ☺ I can’t wait for FTP to open!
Thanks,
Marcus

Creative…thought provoking…refreshing…loved it.
November 1st, 2007 at 8:10 pm
Its a nice bit of philosophy. Of course the New Yorkers will notice you doing that & stay well away. I also wonder how many enjoy the big city for the cover it provides for anonimity. Hiding in the jungle. getting up to all sorts. I guess it comes down to what you want.
I also like that the grand building took heed of your word. I didn’t see it mve a bit

thanks for sharing!
November 1st, 2007 at 10:06 pm
Nice one Dane! Are you going to tell us where that spot is?
November 1st, 2007 at 10:13 pm
It’s fun reading all the theories behind the staircase. Dane, I think you should have a contest to see who can figure out where it is (certain people may be disqualified).
Personally, I think it was a total God moment that you decided on the whim to do a Photo Minute on slowing down (no pre-planning whatsoever), then we get a shot like that when no one is coming in or out. FYI, there’s no slow mo. That’s all real time. It’s one of those filmmaking moments where the stars align. To be filming in NY, not get stopped, and get just the shot you need. Ahhhhh….. :-)
November 1st, 2007 at 10:43 pm
I actually got a an email today from a blog hero of mine (that needs to remain anonymous) who called the spot straight away. Those east coasters know their New York. I’ll bet most everyone who knows Manhattan well, will call it. Any guesses?
BTW, it’s always funny how folks interpret ideas differently. For what it’s worth, I love the seemingly chaotic nature of New York. LOVE IT. It is the biggest small town in the world. It’s the only place where I’ve ever felt connection with everyone yet a chance to feel oddly free in my anonymity. Please don’t read too deep … unless you want to create your own meaning.
My take on this one was pretty simple: if you’re frustrated that you don’t stand out in a noisy world… stop. get perspective … then dive back in. You might just have a better sense of what you’re doing and why you’re doing it. It’s also refreshing sometimes to breathe if you’ve forgotten to do that for a while and are wondering why you’re doing what everyone else is doing.
I’m not suggesting you stop everything or miss the adventure of being in the thick of life in all it’s complexity. Just don’t let the complexity rule you.
One more thing: the reason I liked this episode so much is because the idea of taking pause is an exercise that gives ME life. For those that connect with that, cool. For those that don’t, thanks for indulging me :-). This one was fun.
Thanks so much for all the cool comments too!
November 1st, 2007 at 10:48 pm
well put, i have definitely spent way to much time thinking ahead at what’s next or what is due that i forget the moment and how lucky i am to be in it. thanks for the reminder.

DANE!!!
Seriously, this one is amazing! I am glad I took the time to watch it. It’s pretty awesome when you can be inspired by a situation or surrounding, so much so that it has the opposite affect on you. Like being in one of the fastest, craziest, busiest cities in the U.S. and feeling that need to just STOP. There must be opposition in all things. One of the beauties of this amazing thing called life that God made for us! I love it Dane! Thank you sooooo much for sharing that thought, that feeling and that moment you had! One of my favorite movies has the following quote, “I wanted to live deep and suck out all the marrow of life, to put to rest all that was not life. And not, when I came to die discover that I had not lived…” Hopefully we can all take those necessary breaths, moments and rests. Hopefully we can all take the time once in a while to STOP and look at all that we have to be thankful for and all that we’re blessed with.

Love all the B Roll of NY! Ron did a great job on it!
November 2nd, 2007 at 2:05 pm
Dane –
I ended up over here via DJ’s blog – and really…this spot is right on the money. It is just amazing to me how we can take all of the time in the world to busy ourselves – to find the next project, next phone call, next job…yet sometimes – SLOWING down is the very best thing we can do to our business….
I think often – we all have the goal of freeing up our days to have time to think, time to relax – time to reflect….but often I find myself AFRAID to do so – the guilt of NOT doing.
There is such power in stopping and reflecting – and watching…thanks for this amazing reminder!!
So here’s to taking time to think big – dream big – and find the road we even want to be on. Because sometimes – finding the right place to be busy is the hardest part of all :)
You did an absolutely stunning job with this piece – and I am SO grateful that you took your time to do this – just awesome!!
keep it coming!! (and thank you)

Too true my friend! It’s amazing (thanks Ron!) that in all the hustle & bustle of NY, that he got that shot with NOBODY walking by. We caught up with you two JUSt after you finished shooting this, and the streets were cRaZy!!!
Too true. Too true.

Wonderful. I woke up an hour early today to enjoy the silence and get stuff done. Watched this and remembered sometimes there is beauty in just stopping. Thank you.
November 3rd, 2007 at 10:19 pm
Wow! thank you, Dane. I find myself completely overwhelmed and scattered these days. And I am like Jenna – I have trouble with feeling guilty when I stop. There are always things that need to be done, and everything is always on my mind. I needed to see this today.
thank you so much for being who you are and sharing with us all!
November 4th, 2007 at 6:16 pm
Hi Dane, it’s Greg, Don’s friend from this weekend.
I liked it. It’s shot well, edited well, and the script isn’t bad. It’s got a great message that comes through well.
My only changes would be to have more variety in the types of shots of “people being busy.” They’re just about all at face level from about the same distance. At the end I would show you sitting still with others moving around you instead of just you alone.
I really did like it a lot, thanks for giving me the link. Well done!
Hope this helps
God Bless

Hi Dane, I follow you since one year on internet and this since I discovered DJ. Hi Dane,
I love the feeling of this and where it puts me. Great job by you and Ron!
I did an independent study when I was in school with an awesome photo professor. One assignment he gave us was to not talk at all for a week. It was kind of the same experience. Funny, we thought he was crazy and wasting our time. Turns out it was something I will never forget. The strangest thing is when you don’t talk a lot of people assume you can’t hear either.
Thanks for putting me back there again.
I’m looking forward to your report on the wifi.
The post of your family and the pumpkins is adorable. Talk about time going by fast!
As always, love what you are doing!
November 12th, 2007 at 5:12 pm
Strangely, it reminds me of a Seinfeld episode :)
Glad you are doing well!

Dane, thanks for sharing. I guess it’s just like the logger who keeps working and never stops to sharpen his saw. If he’d just stop for a few minutes he would be so much more productive.
I find myself in the rat race. I’ll take your advice take a step back re evaluate and go forward.
Thank you for Simple Photo Minute and for getting so many people to post on it. It has helped me tremendously.
Best Regards, Joshua Gene

December 4th, 2007 at 12:11 pm
dude, this is sweet, we need more of this in our industry, and every industry, i just got back from NYC a few minutes ago from my “party of four” little workshop and i just saw this post now, its crazy how busy our world is getting and i agree with you, its destroying our families, our health, and our lives, and for what?
keep it up bro…

Fine Ideas, but do you have more detailed info on the topic, another blog or links to other websites too.
